With comedy in comics being rarer than snow on Christmas morning, it's always a pleasure to be able to point to something on the shelves & say read that, it's really funny.
Barry Ween is such a book. It's stunningly, side-achingly funny throughout all 4 books available so far. If the premise of the series, the adventures of a foul mouthed 10 year old super genius, seems like a crude, boring idea, please bear with it. Judd Winick has the skill to pull the idea off. With some really good gags, genuinely interesting stories & even a touch of sentimentality.
This started as a side project, when the all-ages newspaper strip he did proved too limiting for his ideas. Obviously it's crude, rude & silly, but life needs silly just as it needs sensible, & when you remember Winick also wrote the heart-breakingly sad/poignant/enriching Pedro & Me you realise this crude, brilliant comedy has a heart as well. So if you're in the mood for comedy, read this, it's really funny.
