Will Self jetted into New York to publicise his latest book.
The New York Times falls for this completely and does exactly what I imagine Mr Self had in mind and devotes a lot of column inches to say what essentially could be boiled down to
"Weirdo Brit writer walks somewhere. Talks about psycho-geography. Doesn't get mugged."
