Pocklington Pictures
A long time ago I thought it might be nice to start photographing this lovely town of ours. I got off to a good start and then, as is always the way, stopped.
Well, since we were out with the camera today for the Flying Man Festival it seemed an ideal opportunity to start again:

Pocklington Pictures - Market Day (Molly's pics)
Tuesday is market day in Pocklington. We had a walk round and Molly took all of the pictures. I think they're really good and show promise. Anyone else think they're worthy of her getting her own camera?

Pocklington Pictures - Molly's version
This time Molly decided she wanted to have a go at taking some pictures.
And you can tell.
Not just from the slightly lower perspective, not for the pictures of the cuddly toys in the bedroom shop window.
But because they're better than mine. Curses.

Pocklington Pictures
More Pocklington pictures - this time we're in George Street, with the fire station, bus station and the gymnasium of Pocklington School.
Pocklington School Gymnasium. It used to be the railway station for the town, but was closed in 1965 following the Beeching report. The Gymnasium retains many of the beautiful features of the original building though.
In an interesting aside, the joys of Wikipedia are pretty obvious again. I searched for "Pocklington School Wikipedia" in google and got this:
It's not in the main listing but just shows the sort of fun abuse public school children can have with editable pages.

Out and about with the camera around Pocklington again - between torrential rain and occasional snow flurries......
The Co-Op on the Market Place, one of the few places in Pocklington that even nods towards the modern shop idea of open all hours. It took a little while to get used to the idea that everything wasn't available around the clock - but it's a nice feeling to know that we're not part of that culture.
Bunty & Co - one of a number of boutique fashion stores in the town. Always has a lovely window display. The fashion boutiques and the 17 hairdressers and beauty salons (yes 17 hairdressers! In a town with a population of about 9000 - that's a lot of hairdos) give you an idea of the population mix in town.
Another view of the Market Place. We're very, very lucky to have such a lovely town full of mostly independent retailers. The big chain brands haven't managed to turn Pocklington into a monoculture yet, with the only major chains being Sainsburys, Co-Op, Somerfield and a few others (mostly building societies, banks and charity shops).

Pocklington weekend - Millington Wood part 2.
Pictures from our Sunday trip to Millington wood.

Those views and the incredibly vibrant greens in some of the photos were just so spectacularly beautiful. If ever I needed a reminder about why we moved up here I really only need to do a couple of things.
First, look at how happy Molly is.
Second, go for a walk in my beautiful Yorkshire countryside.

Pocklington weekend - Millington Wood
Today we headed off to Millington Wood, 3 miles out of Pocklington.
We've been meaning to head out here for a long, long time, but one thing and another has meant we never made it until today.
It's only a couple of miles round the whole wood, but Molly still wasn't that keen:
Molly being not very keen at all.
But despite protestations, moaning and a generally miserable demenour, we set off on our family hike. Millington Wood is a local nature reserve of ancient Ash woodland with Spruce and Beech introduced in the 50s. It's small, sitting right in the middle of a dry valley called Lily Dale and is past of the larger Millington Wood and Pastures SSI.
Because of it's position, occupying a deep valley and surrounded on all sides by pasture and agri land, it's beauty seems to shine much brighter. A perfect patch of woodland. Even Molly had a fantastic time, although she found a much better use for all of that wood lying around waiting to be put into the charcoal kiln:
Of course, after all of that effort, you deserve a treat. So we popped into Millington village and settled down in the Rambler's Rest. A beautiful, very old fashioned, yet completely not twee, tea room. Coffee and cake. Much better.
The Rambler's Rest also looks like it serves a fantastic meal in the evening, but because of it's tiny size it has to demand bookings of minimum 8 and maximum 16 people. Once you do that, the place is effectively yours for a private party.
